Numeracy
All learners at Glan Usk Primary are given a wide variety of daily opportunities to develop their Numeracy skills and our aim is to ensure that learners are confidently numerate. We believe that being numerate means being able to reason with numbers and other mathematical concepts and to apply these in a range of contexts and to solve a variety of problems. Our learners are encouraged to develop a positive attitude towards mathematics through exciting and challenging tasks and using a variety of approaches that include real life scenarios and problems to ensure there is a clear purpose for learning.
At Glan Usk Primary, learners are given opportunities to develop their reasoning skills through enriched learning experiences. This encourages children to develop an ability to solve problems, reason, think logically and to work systematically and accurately while giving them opportunities to work both independently and collaboratively. Learners are also encouraged to be curious thinkers and to challenge the ideas and concepts within different scenarios whereby ideas of others may be incorrect or correct and they therefore have to explain their responses mathematically with clear reasons and explanations.
Numeracy is a key element of learning at Glan Usk Primary and Numeracy skills are further developed from mathematics lessons through the SHINE planning opportunities whereby learners use the skills taught in mathematics lessons in numeracy rich thematic lessons, for example during history or science lessons.
